Cancún, Quintana Roo, April 24, 2024.- Cancún celebrates its 54th anniversary and the representative of the city and state in the Expansion League, Cancún FC, will clash again against the Potros de Hierro del Atlante, only now in the Quarterfinals of the 2024 Clausura Tournament.

The champion finished in sixth place in the regular phase, which prevented it from hosting the return match at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium. Instead, it will host the first leg this Thursday against the same rival it beat (3-0) in the Final, on December 3.

The team led by professor Luis Arce has gone 13 games without knowing defeat as host, since September 6, when Coyotes de Tlaxcala beat them (1-2) on the eighth day of the Apertura 2023.

For the Caribbeans, it will be the second consecutive Liguilla and the third in total, in the almost four years of history that it has. The first was in the Clausura 2022, with the former goalkeeper, Federico Vilar, when they were eliminated in the Quarterfinals against the Toros del Atlético Celaya.

Further back, with his first coach, Christian 'Chaco' Giménez, he played the Reclassification stage twice, one precisely against the Potros in the Clausura 2021.

The Iguanas have taken the measure of the Atlantistas in the last four matches, since they met on the penultimate day of the Apertura 2023, in the country's capital, on Thursday, October 26, with a goal from the African, Abdoul Kairou Amoustapha.

Already in the Final, Cancún FC won the title with a resounding (3-0) in the return match, in the building on superblock 21, after a goalless draw in the first leg.

In this campaign, on the third date, on Thursday 25 January, already as champions, they imposed conditions (2-0) in 'paradise'. In those four games, the balance is three wins, one draw, six goals in favor and none against.

With the top scorer in their ranks, the Colombian José Rodríguez, the Cancun team will seek their fourth consecutive home victory in the final phase (the previous ones were in the Apertura 2023 against Venados (2-1), Mineros (3-2) and Atlante (3-0), respectively).

First League
with 'Bora' Alcantar

Already without their experienced 'rider', Mario García, the Potros opted for Daniel 'Bora' Alcántar, their former assistant.

With 25 points, thanks to seven wins, four draws, three losses, 19 goals scored in exchange for eight conceded, the Blaugrana entered this stage in third place overall.

Of the six matches they played in the previous final phase, they only lost two, one in the first leg of the Quarterfinals against Cimarrones de Sonora (2-0) and the other (3-0) in the second leg of the Final, in Cancun.

As a visitor, during the regular calendar, the azulgrana accumulated two victories (2-1 in Tepatitlán and 3-0 in Sinaloa), three goalless draws against the University of Guadalajara, La Paz and Tapatío and two defeats, one precisely against the champion, in Cancún (2-0) and another in Mérida (1-0) against Venados.

The Potros had the best defense of the tournament, with only eight goals conceded. On offense, four players (Alexander Magaña, Edson Jair Partida, Edgar Saúl Jiménez and Armando Escobar) scored a hat-trick each.

Among the reinforcements he signed for this tournament, one of the most notable is a former Iguanas player: Arturo Sánchez, who now wears the number '22' on his back, after using the number '14' with the champions. In 12 games, five as a starter, he accumulated 528 minutes, but without scoring a single goal.

Iguanas, for the record
of the 2022 Colts

In the 2022 Apertura, the azulgranas equaled the record of undefeated games (15) that Dorados de Sinaloa established a year earlier (Apertura 2021), with 15 without knowing defeat. On that occasion, 'El Gran Pez' only fell (0-3) against Tampico Madero, curiously his executioner in the Semifinals.

The Potros did not lose from June 30 to Sunday, September 25, when they tied (2-2) at the 'Jalisco' stadium against Leones Negros of the University of Guadalajara. It was not until Wednesday, the 28th of the same month, that the Toros of Atlético Celaya frustrated their streak in the 'Miguel Alemán Valdés' arena, with their victory (2-1).

Cancún FC, with 13 games unbeaten as host, would be two away from reaching that figure, provided they do not lose this Thursday in the Quarterfinals and if they reach the Semifinals they also come out well.
