'El Meco' was the nickname of a local resident in the 20th century, whose nickname referred to a malformation of his lower limbs. In this way, he became associated with the ruins, since he looked after a small ranch on the beach, located near the current lighthouse.
It is located on the northern coast of Quintana Roo, right on the bay of Isla Mujeres. In its early stages, in the late Classic period (600-800 AD), the settlement was linked to Cobá, as a relatively important fishing village.
The building, known as 'El Castillo', is the tallest in the region and from its summit there is a privileged view of the island of Cancun and its surrounding areas, which must have given it strategic importance in pre-Hispanic times. Its port was the centre of great commercial activity and from there, access to Isla Mujeres was controlled, which functioned as one of the most notable sanctuaries of the late Postclassic (1200-1500 AD).
A tribute and homage, a symbol of our attachment to the city and our people. We are Cancun!
