Giovanni Solazzi, vice president of the Iguanas, accompanied by Alejandro Vela, director of sports operations, Lluvia Buenfil, coach of the team and the goalkeeper, José Manuel Arellano lead the historic announcement
Cancún, Quintana Roo, March 21, 2024.- Historic day for Quintana Roo soccer: Relámpagos Cancún FC de Fut Down is born, right on International Down Syndrome Day.
Giovanni Solazzi, vice president of the Expansion League champion, led the announcement at a press conference at 'La Nueve', of the new attraction of the 'Tourist Lounge' at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium.
“A very nice afternoon, a very important and special day for all of us. Now, Relámpagos is also part of the Cancún FC family.
"We wanted to do it on a special date, on the occasion of International Down Syndrome Day, a perfect date. We are very happy," the director acknowledged.
He added that 'we are a football team and the social aspect is, without a doubt, fundamental for us, because we represent the city of Cancun, so, I repeat, this is for everyone; inclusion should be important for any team in the world and for Cancun FC it is even more so.'
Solazzi was accompanied by Alejandro Vela, director of sports operations, Lluvia Buenfil, team coach, and goalkeeper José Manuel Arellano, representing his teammates.
“At Cancún FC we are committed to supporting you, to being with you, to continuing to grow and walk together so that you can fulfill your dreams.
Baseball is for everyone and we are delighted to be able to share our ball, field, shield and home, and for them to be part of us,” said Vela, who along with the Iguanas forward, Luis Loroña, gave their turquoise blue jerseys to each of the intrepid players.
For her part, Lluvia Buenfil, the initiator of the project almost six years ago, said that 'I didn't expect it, and neither did they, being part of Cancún FC and being able to play in other states wearing this beautiful uniform.'
“We have a lot of activity this year, trips, lots of trips (he reiterates). We are going to two tournaments, in July, to the Club América tournament and to the one we do every year, in Guadalajara, in September. In November, we will participate in the fifth edition of the Fut Down National Tournament, this time with the international presence of Guatemala and Costa Rica,” he explained.
A total of 14 boys, aged 15 and over, make up the Relámpagos Cancún FC Fut Down squad. They train on Mondays and Thursdays at 6:00 p.m. at the 'La Equidad' field.
“Women can also join, although for now we only have men. The matches are mixed, I haven't received any girls, so the invitation is also for them.
"I'm almost six years into this project, which will be my graduation project. We are evolving every year, and that is precisely what motivates me: fighting for my children's dreams so that this will be a great achievement," he said.
He highlighted that 'a very ambitious project is what Liga MX is aiming for, so that each team has its own Fut Down club, as Club América, Santos de Torreón and Querétaro already do, to promote the Liga MX Fut Down Tournament.'
