Cancún, Quintana Roo, May 14, 2024.- A new and historic episode for the city of Cancún, now for the title of Champion of Champions, will be starred by the last two champions of the Expansion League, Cancún FC of the Apertura 2023 and Atlante of the Clausura 2024.
Yes, destiny and football have put them face to face again. Better yet, in another Final in less than six months, since Sunday, December 3, when they decided the champion of the Apertura 2023 at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium, after a goalless draw in the first leg, in the capital of the country.
Both teams have intensified their rivalry to the point that, every time they meet, whether in this tourist destination or the country's capital, they are duels of power to power.
The most recent time they faced each other was in the recently concluded Clausura 2024, first, on Thursday 25th and then, on Sunday 28th, in the Quarterfinals. The victory (overall 3-1) went to those led by Daniel 'Bora' Alcántar, thanks to the two successes (0-1 and 2-1) that catapulted them at that time, to the Semifinal round.
"I would have liked to win the second championship, however, we are two games away from seeking another title, the Champion of Champions, putting the team at the top, in the place it deserves," says the top scorer, the Colombian, José Rodríguez.
Despite not achieving the 'bi' in the Clausura 2024, he accepts that his title in the Apertura 2023, 'allowed us to earn the respect of our rivals'.
“We are privileged because not all of us are seen like this, with respect.
Sometimes, we players get angry when in a match, a team shows one face and against us, a totally different one, they play their Final, as they say in football," he says.
In the past, the champion of this Final automatically qualified for the First Division, as a reward for the effort they made during the season.
If at the end of the regular time of the second leg, the overall score is still tied, two extra periods of 15 minutes each will be added. If the tie persists, there will be penalty kicks until the champion is determined.
Third experience
for Colts
For the Blaugrana, it will be the third consecutive time that they have played in the Campeón de Campeones, having previously done so in the 2021-2022 competition against Atlético Morelia and in 2022-2023 against Tapatío, respectively.
First, the Purépechas came out victorious (0-1) in the Ciudad de los Deportes, but, in the return match, Atlante would achieve victory by the same score at the 'José María Morelos y Pavón' stadium, which forced the winner to be defined in a penalty shootout.
In the end, the score in 'sudden death' would be 5-4 in favor of those led, at that moment, by Mario García.
Later, as champions of the 2022 Apertura, their rival was Tapatío, champion of the 2023 Clausura. In the first leg, the red-and-white youth team took the victory (3-1), despite losing (1-0) in the second leg, in Mexico City (3-2 on aggregate), which meant that the Chivas subsidiary was crowned champion.
Atlante ended its participation with a streak of 13 games without knowing defeat in the Liguilla, at the Ciudad de los Deportes.
Prior to the final phase of the campaign that concluded, the Potros had not lost a home game since Wednesday, May 18, 2022, when Atlético Morelia beat them in the first leg of the Clausura Final of that year. Now, with their three victories against Cancún FC (2-1) precisely, in the Quarterfinals, Tapatío (5-1) in the Semifinals and Universidad de Guadalajara (2-0) in the Final, in that order, they have already gone 13 games without losing at home.

The Champion of Champions, instituted as of the 2020-2021 edition with the Liga de Expansión MX format, replaces the one awarded to the Champion of Ascenso.
As compensation for the suspension of promotion to the First Division, the winner of the series will receive a cash prize and the trophy that accredits them as the champion of the season.
In 2019, it was the last time that a team from the promotion division (Atlético San Luis) gained access to Liga MX, since in 2020 the promotion-relegation division would come to an end.
Potros Neza (Atlante affiliate, 88-89), Unión de Curtidores (98-99), La Piedad (2012-13), Cafetaleros de Tapachula (2017-18), Tepatitlán (2020-21), Atlante (2021-2022) and Tapatío (2022-23), did not ascend, despite earning their right on the field.
