CANCUN FC DIVIDES HONORS AGAINST ATLANTE IN THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
Iguanas and Potros draw (1-1) at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium and leave everything for the return match, on Saturday at the City of Sports
Cancún, Quintana Roo, May 15, 2024.- Cancún FC and Atlante starred in an intense game at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium, within the framework of the first episode of the historic Champion of Champions Final.
Both coincided again in a battle for the title, since they collided in the Apertura 2023, precisely in the building of superblock 21, when the Iguanas were crowned on Sunday, December 3.
Recently, in the quarterfinal round of the Clausura 2024, the Potros eliminated the Caribbeans, a situation that, equally, foreshadowed a duel of colossi.
The just over seven thousand fans enjoyed a great party in the stands, spectacular with a drone show that captivated the audience at half-time.
The hosts opened the scoring with a header from defender Hedgardo Marín, which came from a corner kick. Just four minutes in, they were already leading 1-0.
The Caribbean team got off to a dizzying start, well organised at the back and dangerous on offense. In fact, Johan Alonzo had the second chance, when he shot from the edge of the area, however, it went slightly wide of the goal guarded by Humberto 'Gansito' Hernandez.
Atlante had not troubled the goalkeeper, Gustavo Gutiérrez, until the 32nd minute, when they surprised with the equalizing goal (1-1), thanks to Diego Cruz.
In the second half, Cancún FC kept up the pace, but its leading attacker, Colombian José Rodríguez, was effectively nullified by the Atlantista defense.
The Iguanas reinforced their offense with Alfonso Tamay from Cancun and other experienced players, such as Paúl Uscanga and Luis Loroña, the latter a threat to the visiting defense in the aerial game.
Later, Rodrigo Reyes and Samuel González came in, replacing Hedgardo Marín and Junior Moreira, respectively.
On Saturday, May 18 at 7:00 p.m. (Quintana Roo time), Cancún FC will visit Atlante at the Ciudad de los Deportes to decide the Champion of Champions. If the overall tie persists, there will be two extra periods of 15 minutes each. If the tie continues, then they will proceed to the penalty shootout.
