CANCUN FC ACHIEVES A DARGENT DRAW AGAINST DORADOS AND RETURNS TO HOME UNDEFEATED

The Iguanas were losing (1-2) against 'El Gran Pez', however, a goal at 89' by Samuel González put the final figures (2-2) against Sinaloa at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium, on the 15th and last day of the regular phase of the Clausura 2024 of the Expansion League

Cancún, Quintana Roo, April 9, 2024.- A dramatic outcome caused the champion, Cancún FC, to draw (2-2) against Dorados de Sinaloa on matchday 15 and the last of the regular phase of the 2024 Clausura Tournament of the Liga de Expansión MX.

The tie extended their streak to 13 games without knowing defeat at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium, however, they will now wait for results to know their destiny, either directly to the Quarterfinals, or through the 'Play-In'.

Barely four minutes in, Johan Alonzo sent a pass from the right into the heart of the area, where Alfonso Tamay appeared with a shot that went wide of the goal guarded by Víctor Mendoza.

Despite their dominance in the match, Dorados opened the scoring at 22', thanks to a goal by Christian Cañozales. Five minutes later, the Iguanas tied the score (1-1) with a free kick by Raúl Castillo, which beat goalkeeper Mendoza at the base of the left post.

What seemed to be the champion's second goal, when the Colombian, José Rodríguez, was unable to finish the ball a few meters from the goalkeeper, Mendoza, was well taken advantage of by the northerners at 39', in a counterattack, in which Daniel López was one on one with Gustavo Gutiérrez to shoot it and regain the advantage (1-2) for Sinaloa.

The second half was dramatic, with Cancún FC attacking in search of a draw. And Walter Ortega almost managed to do so with a powerful shot that forced the goalkeeper, Mendoza, to deflect it to the corner.

Later, 'El Gallo' Vázquez dared to shoot from long distance, forcing another save from Mendoza, now with both hands.

Jorge Díaz Price, one of the moves made by the host, almost scored the equaliser when he shot a few metres from the goalkeeper, Mendoza.

At 40', Luis Loroña tried to shoot from the back of the net in the small area, but was unable to do so. Fortunately for him, the ball fell to Díaz Price, who without thinking, also shot, but without success, provoking a reaction from the goalkeeper, Víctor Mendoza.

It was not until the 89th minute when Samuel González unhinged the fans with the equaliser (2-2), with a shot to the second post, which left Mendoza with no chance.

With nine goals, Colombian José Rodríguez was the top scorer for the Caribbean team. He is the second scorer in the history of the franchise to score nine, since in the 2023 Clausura, Sinaloa's Luis Loroña achieved it, a title that, in the end, would go to Ricardo Marín (formerly of Celaya).

So far, in 28 games between the Apertura 2023 and Clausura 2024 (regular phase only), the Iguanas have accumulated with Luis Arce, 15 wins, five draws, eight losses, 47 goals for, 31 against and 50 points.
