CANCUN FC LOSES TO VENADOS IN THE PENINSULAR CLASSIC
The Iguanas fall (2-0) in Merida and suffer their first defeat, since Leones Negros of the University of Guadalajara beat them in the fifth round, on Friday, February 9, at the 'Jalisco' stadium
Mérida, Yucatán April 3, 2024.- Cancún FC fell (2-0) against Venados FC at the 'Carlos Iturralde Rivero' stadium, on matchday 14 of the 2024 Clausura Tournament of the Expansion League.
Goals by Patricio Zerecero (13') and William Guzmán (20') meant that the horned ones won the Peninsular Classic in the penultimate round of the regular phase.
The Iguanas have gone seven games without knowing defeat, since the fifth date, when Leones Negros of the University of Guadalajara had surpassed them, by exactly the same score (2-0), on Friday, February 9 at the 'Jalisco' stadium.
The Yucatecans opened the scoring in the 13th minute, thanks to Patricio Zerecero with a shot at the base of Gustavo Gutiérrez's right post, after a play on the right wing by Javier Casillas.
Later, in the 20th minute, William Guzmán would score the second, this time with a great finish in the heart of the area, to beat Gustavo Gutiérrez. Venados was already ahead 2-0.
With the lead on the scoreboard, Rafael Fernández's team pulled back their lines to avoid a reaction from the Cancun team, through their key players, such as Raúl Castillo, the Colombian José Rodríguez or the African Cheick Traore.
As expected, the Iguanas came out with everything in search of the goal that would put them back in the battle. Goalkeeper Santiago Ramírez was a factor in the hosts keeping the score at zero.
With Alfonso Tamay replacing another Cancun native, Jorge Díaz Price and Hedgardo Marín for Rodrigo Reyes, respectively, the champion did not stop in its fight to close the gap. Later, at 73', Luis Loroña would take Junior Moreira's place.
The defeat leaves the Caribbeans with 21 points. The horned ones, for their part, have 29.
On matchday 15, Cancún FC will return home to the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium to host Dorados de Sinaloa on Tuesday, April 9.
