CANCUN FC RENEWS JOSE RODRIGUEZ UNTIL 2026
The Iguanas' board of directors signs the star Colombian scoring champion of the 2024 Clausura of the Liga de Expansión MX for two years
Cancun, Quintana Roo May 31, 2024.- Cancun FC will have José Rodríguez for a while.
The board of directors of the Iguanas, the new Champion of Champions of the 2023-2024 Season of the Liga de Expansión MX, announced the renewal of the contract of the star Colombian scoring champion, until 2026.
The South American 'killer', originally from Bolívar, Colombia, arrived at Cancún FC for the Apertura 2022, from Alacranes de Durango, with whom he played since the Premier League (Apertura 2021 and Clausura 2022). Later, he was promoted to the Expansion League, thanks to the victory (5-2 overall) he achieved in the Final against Mazorqueros FC, in the Clausura 2022.
He scored nine goals between the Apertura 2022 (5) and Clausura 2023 (4), curiously one against the Caribbeans when they faced each other on Tuesday, January 31 at the 'Francisco Zarco' stadium, in Durango territory, on the occasion of the fifth date of the Clausura 2023.
“I didn’t expect it (to be the top scorer) because when I joined the team, I did so to play as a winger, not as a forward. Thank God we were able to win that title playing in that position, but mainly, to help the team,” he says.
In the recent 2023-24 campaign, 'Colo', as his teammates call him, recorded 13 goals in the regular phase, (4) in the Apertura 2023 and (9) in the Clausura 2024.
During that period, but in the Liguilla, he scored a pair (one per tournament), first, on Sunday, November 26 against Mineros de Zacatecas in the return game of the Semifinals, at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo'. Then, he did it on Sunday, April 28 against Potros de Hierro del Atlante, in the decisive game of the Quarterfinals, at the Ciudad de los Deportes.
Rodríguez's success occurs precisely in Quintana Roo, where he is well established after his adventure with teams such as Pioneros de Cancún and Inter Playa del Carmen, both in the Premier League, and with Atlante, in the now-defunct Ascenso MX.
God and his family, keys in his life
Rodríguez is a player with a good star, with important foundations in his life, which undoubtedly keep him with his feet firmly on the ground.
"These achievements are dedicated to God and my family. To God because I owe everything to him and to my family because they have always been with me in good and bad times during my career," he says.
Obviously, it gives a lot of credit to the fans, another very important part in making a 'match' in the team's history.
“It feels great when people get involved and passionate about football, just like we do on the pitch,” he says.
