CANCUN FC AND AUSTIN FC II ENGAGE IN A FIGHTING BATTLE OF CHAMPIONS IN AUSTIN, TEXAS
The Americans claim victory (2-1) with goals from Micah Burton and Alonso Ramírez; Mauro Pérez scored for the Iguanas at Parmer Field, which faced the MLS Nex Pro and Liga de Expansión MX Champion
Austin, Texas, USA July 27, 2024.- Cancún FC and Austin FC II overcame a thrilling battle of champions at Parmer Field, home of the MLS Next Pro champion, who faced the Liga de Expansión MX champion. In the end, the victory (2-1) went to the hosts with goals from Micah Burton and Alonso Ramírez, despite the fact that the Caribbean team discounted through Mauro Pérez.
The Iguanas lined up with the following lineup: Christopher Andrade in goal; Jonathan Hernandez, Benjamin Galindo, Hedgardo Marin and Axl Padilla in defense; Junior Moreira, Paul Uscanga, Zahid Muñoz and Johan Alonzo in midfield; Jorge Diaz Price and Jose Rodriguez in the center of attack.
Just seven minutes into the game, the Americans opened the scoring with a header from Micah Burton, derived from a free kick by Osman Bukari, which CJ Fodrey won in the jump with another header to the far post, allowing the number '32' to counter-attack and beat goalkeeper Cristopher Andrade.
It was the 28th minute when Cancún FC had a great chance to tie the score with an indirect free kick a few meters from the goalkeeper Matt Bersano's goal. Jorge Díaz Price passed it to Hedgardo Marín, but the defender did not direct his shot correctly and missed the goal.
At 35', the Iguanas created another opportunity, this time through Colombian José Rodríguez, with a cross shot that threatened the right post, but goalkeeper Matt Bersano made a spectacular save with both hands.
Already in the second half, at 58' to be exact, the hosts extended their lead with a shot by Alonso Ramírez (former player of Atlas Sub 20 and Mazorqueros of the Premier League) to the near post, which left the goalkeeper, Cristopher Andrade, with no chance after taking advantage of a corner kick from the right.
Still in the 64th minute, Austin led to a new offensive with a header to the fork by CJ Fodrey, which left Andrade static.
The Caribbean team reacted immediately, at 65', with a goal from Cancun's Mauro Pérez, in a great play with the Colombian, José Rodríguez.
Cancún FC did not give up and at 73', the African, Junior Moreira came close to equalizing the score, if it weren't for the fact that the goalkeeper, Bersano, spectacularly saved the powerful long-distance shot from the African.
The Iguanas will begin their participation in the 2024 Apertura Tournament of the Liga de Expansión MX against Alteños de Tepatitlán, on Saturday, August 3 at 6:00 p.m. at the 'Andrés Quintana Roo' stadium.
